WE SHOULD NOT GIVE UP AND WE SHOULD NOT ALLOW THE PROBLEM TO DEFEAT US.
Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam

This quote best summarises our Missile Man, Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam. Born into a Tamil Muslim family in the pilgrimage town of Rameshwaram in Tamilnadu on 15th October 1931, he was the youngest in his family. His childhood was spent in poverty. But he never saw it as a bane. He sold newspapers to supplement his family’s income.  He had very vivid memories of his childhood.

Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam was raised in an atmosphere filled with love. Decades later he wrote in one of his books how he fondly remembered his mother feeding her own quota of food to the children and go hungry herself.

Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam was described as a bright and hardworking student. He showed a strong desire to learn. His science teacher Siva Subramaniya Iyer left a lasting impression on him, which later shaped his career. When he was ten years old, he took the students to the seashore and asked them to observe the birds in flight. The teacher gave the children a theoretical explanation with a practical example which made A.P.J Abdul Kalam realise that his life’s calling had something to do with flight.

After completing his studies at Schwartz Higher Secondary School, he enrolled at St.Joseph ‘s college, Thiruchirapally and graduated in science in 1954. Pursuing his childhood dream, he traveled to Madras to study aerospace engineering in Madras Institute of Technology.

During his third year, he was assigned a project to design a low-level attack aircraft together with a few other students. The project was a difficult one and they were given a very tight deadline. The young men toiled. They worked under immense pressure and finally managed to achieve the target within the stipulated time. This reflected A.P.J Abdul Kalam’s dedication.

At this point, A.P.J Abdul Kalam dreamt of becoming a fighter pilot. But he narrowly missed qualifying. God had other plans for him.

After earning his degree from MIT, he joined Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1958. In the early 1960s, he worked with the renowned space scientist Dr.Vikram Sarabhai. However, he was not much satisfied with his work at DRDO and was happy to be transferred to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) IN 1969. He served as the project director of the SLV-III, India’s first indigenously designed and produced satellite launch vehicle.

In the 1970s he made efforts to develop Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) which would allow India to launch its Indian Remote Sensing Satellite. It was an eventual success.

In in 1983, he returned to DRDO to lead the project Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). This program received great political support and it proved to be a resounding success. They produced a number of successful missiles including Agni missile and Prithvi missile. This earned him the nickname “Missile Man”. During this program, his involvement with Governmental agencies increased and was eventually appointed as the Scientific Advisor to the Defence minister in 1992. In 1999, he was appointed as the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India.

It was under his able guidance that India successfully became a fully fledged nuclear state. He played a great role in Pokhran -II, a series of five nuclear bomb explosions.

In 2002, the National Democratic Alliance which was in power decided to nominate Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam for the post of President of India. Being a popular figure he garnered support from major political parties and easily won the Presidential election.

Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam assumed office as the 11th President of India on 25th July 2002. He is the first bachelor and the first scientist to occupy the office. During his term of five years, he became popular as the “People’s President” as he was very keen on interacting with people directly. He had immense faith in the youth of this country. He spent a lot of time interacting with students and inspiring them. He stated that “small aim is a crime”. He was a great visionary. He proposed an action plan to make India a developed nation by 2020. He was however criticized for not taking solid action on the mercy petitions of the convicts on the death row submitted to him. He acted on only one plea. On 25th July 2007, he stepped down from the post deciding not to contest again for the post.

Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam was very passionate about interacting with bright young minds. He devoted the later years of his career to this passion. He ventured into the academic field. He became a visiting professor at institutions including Indian Institute of Management Shillong, IIM Ahmedabad, and IIM Indore. He served as the Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. He emphasized the role of the youth in nation building and urged them to contribute to the same. Towards this goal he launched a program called “What Can I Give movement “ to develop the giving attitude.

Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam is the recipient of numerous awards. He received Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna in the years 1981,1990 and 1997 respectively. The united nations observed his 79th birthday as World Students day.

Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam was a great patriot. He was a very simple person and he leads an unpretentious life. He loved playing Rudra Veena and his collection of books are considered as his greatest possession. He was a vegetarian and ate simple food. He was a benevolent soul. He often sent money to his elderly relatives. He maintained close ties with is siblings. Though a devout Muslim, he respected all religions. He was well versed in the Hindu tradition. He read Bhagavad Gita regularly. He was an epitome of national integration. He was a scholar of Thirukkural and was known to quote at least one couplet in his speeches. He had a keen interest in Tamil literature and wrote poems in Tamil. He has authored several books. He is known to write his own thank you cards with personalized messages in his own handwriting.

He remained active till the very end. While delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong on 27th July 2015, he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. He was confirmed dead due to cardiac arrest at 7.45pm. The Government of India declared a seven day mourning period as a mark of respect. His life is an inspiration for every individual. He inspired the nation of a billion to dream. A fitting tribute to this great soul would be to live by his words.
